I am so glad that finally a court has seen sense. If you break into someone's house/property/etc, you are breaking the law, and as such, you shouldn't expect that the law will protect you from the consequences.
Serves the crim right, tbh. Wasn't the first time he'd done it, and come on, the victim was 73, hardly a fair match anyway. Granted, had the crim been killed it would have been a different matter, but you know, a little injury to slow him down till the police arrive ...
