A while ago I had a thought, today while out getting lunch I saw it in action.

With the advent of smaller and smaller technology, in particular for this example bluetooth phone headsets, I wondered whether people's opinions would change.

As the old saying goes, the first sign of madness is talking to yourself. I've often wondered with the more widespread use of the bluetooth headset, and it negating the necessity of having a phone on view, whether talking to oneself in the street would become more socially acceptable

On my way to the sandwich shop at lunch, there was one of the local care in the community guys (not sure the PC way of describing people with disabilities these days) wandering down the street, minding his own business, quite happily having a conversation with himself.

A bit further on, there's a woman, in business suite with attache case and a purposful stride, for all intents and purposes talking to herself and gesticulating as she's walking down the street. Granted on closer inspection you can see her headset tucked out the way under her hair, but still, if you weren't to know, how would you tell the difference?

I still do a double take when I 'see' people apparently talking to themselves in the street :-) It's the same when I see drivers jabbering away to thin air ;-)

heh

I like watching what people do in cars, it makes the journey a little less boring ;) It makes me smile when I see the people singing to themselves, or just generally being happy

I play a guessing game: off their meds, or on the phone. Sometimes it's a crap shoot, but if you're close enough you can usually guess by smell. ;)

I actually mentioned this to one of my aunts, who's in psychiatric care, about a year ago. It turns out that they encourage people with schizophrenia to speak into their mobile phones if they have to absolutely have to talk back to their auditory hallucinations, and actually have dummy phones for this purpose. It saves their dignity.

tis a good idea, after all, who's to tell that there's no-one on the other end of the phone

I definitely do that (talk to the air--or the answering machine at home) if I'm on the train late at night and someone creepy wants to talk to me...

I also have a tendency to talk to myself while running--either "get your ass up that hill, wimp" type conversation or trying to solve work or what-am-I-having-for-dinner type problems which wind up being muttering conversations our --mainly because trying to think completely inside my head doesn't work when my whole brain is fighting the run vs. stop battle.

Maybe I should start wearing a bluetooth when I run.

well, they are getting quite small and unobtrusive these days. Not sure if one would stand up to the rigours of jogging though, i guess it would depend on how securely it could be fastened

Maybe she just had the headset so you wouldn't know she was a loonie*. ;)
